The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
