RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
